HP to offer webOS as open-source software

Hewlett-Packard has turned to former eBay CEO Meg Whitman to run the technology giant. The HP board pushed aside Leo Apotheker after just 11 months on the job, having lost confidence in his ability to lead the company long-term. (Sept. 22)
SAN FRANCISCO – It may be one of the technology world’s most expensive efforts to give something away: Hewlett-Packard Co. said Friday that it’s making its webOS mobile system available as open-source software that anyone can use and modify freely.
HP snagged the intuitive webOS software when it paid $1.8 billion in 2010 for Palm Inc. in what became a failed effort to revive the flailing smartphone pioneer. HP said it still plans to develop and support webOS.

The Apple TV set, a device that promises to shake up the TV business the way the iPod and iPhone reshaped music and cell phones, is now being targeted for a summer release, according to reports over the weekend.

2nd Chevy Volt battery fire

WASHINGTON — Federal officials say they are investigating the safety of lithium-ion battery in General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet Volt after a second battery fire following crash-testing of the electric car.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday that three Volt battery packs were crash-tested last week. In one instance, the battery caught fire afterward, and in another the battery emitted smoke and sparks.

Russian President Threatens Space Agency for Failures

MOSCOW – The Russian president threatened to punish those responsible for the country’s recent space failures, which included the botched launch of a Mars probe earlier this month.
Dmitry Medvedev warned that the space officials responsible could face heavy fines or even criminal penalties, the Ria Novosti news agency reported.

Anonymous white-clad workers, their faces obscured by surgical masks, cross a cavernous, high-ceilinged room. They pause to adjust or inspect large pieces of mysterious equipment, some of which is spangled with bright gold foil. It’s obvious that they’re building something complicated and important.

The ticker was included on the list of “weeklys” distributed by the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and available for trading on both the CBOE and the International Securities Exchange (ISE) as of November 23rd for expiration December 2nd, 2011.
Trading in the newly listed “weekly” was very light ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday with just about 1,400 contracts changing hands. More on page 9
